Driving Change. Our Pride in Sustainability.

We’re a business that is proud of what we do and how we do it. We’re proud of where we’ve come from, where we’re going and of the people driving that journey with us.

As one of Europe’s leading truck and bus companies, we recognise we have a significant responsibility to Sustainability, to do better for the planet, improve our operations, and support our people and the communities we serve in the long term.

We’re ambitious about driving change, with big goals to reach net zero by 2050 and achieve carbon neutrality across operations by 2035. And from the long-term plans to the short-term wins, everything adds up to build a better and more sustainable MAN.

We caught up with Mark, our Head of Procurement, who is leading the charge in Sustainability, and Adrian, Branch Manager at our Nuneaton site, the UK’s pilot branch for Sustainability, to find out how local action is helping drive company-wide change. And how it’s often the small changes that have a big impact.

Changing Habits. Shaping the Future.

What are the main sustainability goals you’re working toward?
Mark:
Carbon neutrality by 2035 is one of MAN’s core business strategies, and I’m proud to be leading that work on the environmental and Sustainability side.

Adrian: Our Nuneaton branch is the trial site for new initiatives. We test, refine, and roll out what works across the wider network.

How does Sustainability fit into MAN’s overall mission?
Mark:
It’s a fundamental part of how we’re evolving as a business. We align with our Munich head office on direction, but here in the UK, we’re seen as a real front-runner when it comes to practical implementation.

What have been some of the most effective changes so far?
Mark:
We started with something simple, disposable gloves. The average technician uses 7 to 9 pairs a day, which used to go straight into the bin. We sourced biodegradable alternatives, trialled them across the branch, and people loved them. It’s reduced our single-use waste and costs significantly.

Adrian: The same happened with safety shoes, we trialled pairs made with recycled plastic bottles, and again, the feedback in branch was overwhelmingly positive. They’re good quality and people felt good wearing something that was part of the solution.

Mark: Another big win was tackling single-use rags. We were getting through massive amounts in the workshop environment, so we switched to a laundered rag and spill mat service across all sites. It’s cleaner, greener, and more efficient.
A huge win for the environment and for the business is that we now send absolutely nothing to landfill. All our waste collections go to a provider with a fully sustainable recycling process. That’s a big step in the right direction.

What motivated you both to get involved in this work?
Adrian:
We’re both passionate about sustainability and we work really well together as a team to introduce and implement those changes.

Mark: I wanted to make sustainability feel achievable not something separate, but something we all contribute to every day. It’s amazing how the small changes add up to benefit the environment and as a business saves us a lot of money.

Has your view of sustainability changed since starting this work?
Adrian:
Hugely. I’ve always been interested in sustainability, but I didn’t realise how much of a difference we could make, quickly. Now, I notice everything, how much we waste, how much energy we use. It’s become second nature.

Mark: It’s become part of how I think, how I lead. I’m proud of the difference it makes or our customers, our business, and the world around us. And it’s exciting to think about the potential for where we could take this next.
